The young composite cone of Mount Ngauruhoe rises prominently from the southern face of Mt Tongariro. Ngauruhoe is around 2500 years old and last errupted only a few decades ago. The harsh climate and recent soils allow only scattered tussocks and a few hardy herbs to grow.
