Sunset over the Moeraki Boulders. In Maori legend the boulders represent the eel baskets, calabashes, and kumara washed ashore from the wreck of the sailing canoe Arai-te-uru. To scientists these large spherical boulders are known as septarian concretions, exhumed from the mudstone of the Moeraki Formation by coastal erosion.
